Claremore, Okla. – Construction is underway on more than $4 million in athletic facility improvements at Rogers State University.

The projects are being funded through a student facility fee along with private donations and will benefit six of the Hillcats’ 10 athletic programs. Enhancements include a new multi-purpose building at the baseball/softball complex, a new fieldhouse for the soccer and cross country teams, and the installation of artificial turf at Soldier Field.

“We are thrilled to unveil the details of these projects as construction begins,” said RSU Director of Athletics Ryan Bradley. “These improvements will be a huge asset to our athletic programs, the RSU campus, and our community. Once completed, these facilities will be recognized among the best small-college venues in the country.”

Work began at the site of the Hillcat baseball/softball complex in late July. The centerpiece of construction is a 7,790 square-foot, two-story building positioned between the playing fields. The first floor includes concessions and restrooms for patrons as well as two dressing rooms for umpires and multiple storage areas. The second floor features separate press boxes for baseball and softball, coaches’ offices, and a donors’ suite with indoor and outdoor seating. New grandstands with stadium seating, a ticket booth, and a paved entry plaza are also included in the project. Construction is scheduled for completion in time for the 2012 RSU baseball and softball seasons.

Dirt work will begin on a new fieldhouse for the RSU soccer and cross country teams in early October. The 8,986 square-foot building will be located in the north end zone of Soldier Field, adjacent to Blue Starr Drive. The facility features spacious locker rooms for the men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Coaches’ offices, an athletic training room, and storage areas for athletics and intramurals will be located in the central area of the building. The facility also includes permanent concessions and restrooms for patrons and a paved concourse area with sightlines to the field.

The final component of the facility improvements will be the installation of artificial turf at Soldier Field. Installation of the new turf will begin following the conclusion of the 2011 RSU soccer season in November. The artificial turf surface will allow RSU to maximize the availability and functionality of historic Soldier Field. The durability of artificial turf will permit the university to utilize Soldier Field for athletic training and competition, intramural sports, and other student activities and community events.

Construction on the new fieldhouse and the installation of artificial turf are scheduled for completion prior to the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

The RSU athletic department is offering numerous ways for businesses and individuals to partner with the Hillcats in support of these projects. Naming rights opportunities, engraved granite markers and bricks, and reserved seating/club access are all available. Please contact the RSU athletic department at 918-343-7782 for more details.

RSU is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sooner Athletic Conference. Intercollegiate athletics was revived on the Hill in 2005 with the implementation of baseball and softball. The university has since added men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s cross country. The Hillcats have claimed three conference championships and made six appearances at national championship events during their brief existence. Three RSU programs earned Top 25 national rankings in 2010-11 and spurred the athletic department to an overall winning percentage of 67 percent.
