Carroll, Cats Edge Bison, 2-1
Whellyn Carroll tallied the game-winning goal for the Hillcats. CLAREMORE, Okla. -
The Rogers State men’s soccer team tallied an important Sooner Athletic
Conference victory on Tuesday night as the Hillcats defeated Oklahoma Baptist
2-1 at Soldier Field.
With the win, the Hillcats move into second place in the SAC
standings with one regular season game to play.
Junior Whellyn Carroll earned the game-winning goal in the
73rd minute of play. Kevin Howard sent a set piece into the box,
Carroll headed it to teammate Necas Collins who fired a shot on goal but OBU
goalkeeper Marcus Oliveira blocked the shot and it landed at Carroll’s feet
where he passed it into the goal. It was the Johannesburg, South Africa native’s
second goal of the season.
Sophomore Mohammed Shaban gave the Cats an early lead in the
first half as he found the back of the net in the 11th minute of the
game. He slotted the ball near post off a goalkeeper deflection, giving the
Tulsa, Okla. native his fifth goal of the season.
The Bison knotted the score in the 35th minute of
the game as Pedro Pereira blasted a free kick into the goal, upper 90 backside,
from 25 yards out. It was the Goiania, Brazil native’s second goal of the
season.
OBU outshot the Hillcats 32-12, putting eight shots on goal
while RSU fired six shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Inger came up with
seven big saves for the Hillcats, earning the win in goal.
Rogers State (7-6-3, 3-1-3) returns to the pitch on Friday
for the regular season finale at Soldier Field against St. Gregory’s. Kickoff
is slated for 8 p.m. and RSU will be honoring four seniors prior to the game. The
