SHAWNEE, Okla.-Eight
runners from the Rogers State cross country team competed at the Sooner
Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday at
Oklahoma Baptist University.
Freshman Brenda Felipe claimed first place in the 5000 meter
run with a time of 19:08.52, 20 seconds ahead of second place finisher Melyssa
Cardenas of Oklahoma Christian. Felipe was the lone Hillcat woman to compete in
the race.
Five RSU men’s cross country runners competed in the 5000
meter run and were led by Jarrett Sanders who finished seventh with a time of
16.05.94. Chandler Smith and Brandon Payne finished the race 10th
and 11th respectively. Smith ran the race in 16:34.67 and Payne
completed the run in 16:37.38. Oscar Reyes finished 12th with a time
of 16:40.81 and DJ Polson rounded out the group in 16th with of time
of 17:51.10.
In the men’s 1500 meter run, Payne finished 10th
with a time of 4:11.25. Smith came in 21st with a time of 4:21.05
and Sanders finished 22nd with a time of 4:21.21 while Marcus Trevino
tallied 26th with a time of 4:30.37.
Natalie Iwamoto was the lone Hillcat woman to compete in the
800 meter run, placing 14th with a time of 2: 32.91.
Oklahoma Baptist ran away with the Sooner Athletic
Conference Track and Field Championship, winning the women's title by 224
points and the men's by 130. OBU’s Verone Chambers and Caleb Dunn were named
High Point Award winners.
