Rogers State University has announced it will field men’s and women’s cross country teams for the first time in 2010-2011 and Chris McCormick has been hired to lead the new programs.

The addition of men’s and women’s cross country increases RSU’s team sports programs to 10 for the upcoming academic year. Eight Sooner Athletic Conference schools currently field men’s and women’s cross country teams.

“We’re excited to add men’s and women’s cross country to the slate of Hillcat athletic programs,” said RSU Athletic Director Wren Baker. “We’ve hired a good young coach in Chris McCormick and we believe these teams will be a great addition to our growing department.”

Before joining the Hillcats, McCormick served as the assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach at East Central University. He helped the Tigers to a second place finish in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference in 2003. McCormick coached four all-conference runners and one All-American at ECU. He spent the past five years working for Farmers Insurance before getting back into coaching.

McCormick earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education at ECU while a member of the track and field program. He twice competed in the NAIA Track & Field National Championships, placing 8th and 11th in the marathon.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the new cross country programs at RSU,” McCormick stated. “This school and its athletic programs have enjoyed incredible success over the last few years and I’m hopeful that the cross country teams will add to that success in the near future.”

The RSU cross country programs will begin competition in Fall 2010 and will be immediately eligible for conference and national championships. Recruitment for the cross country teams will begin immediately. Students interested in finding out more about the RSU cross country programs can contact Coach McCormick at (918) 343-7689 or cmccormick@rsu.edu.
